The Effects of EFT on Long-Term
Psychological Symptoms

Abstract
Previous research (Salas, 2000; Wells, et al., 2003),
theoretical writings (Arenson, 2001, Callahan, 1985,
Durlacher, 1994, Flint, 1999, Gallo, 2002, Hover-
Kramer, 2002, Lake & Wells, 2003, Lambrou & Pratt,
2000, and Rowe, 2003), and many case reports
(www.emofree.com) have suggested that energy
psychology is an effective psychotherapy treatment
that improves psychological functioning. The purpose
of the present study was to measure any changes in
psychological functioning that might result from
participation in an experiential Emotional Freedom
Techniques (EFT) workshop and to examine the long-
term effects. Using a time-series, within-subjects
repeated measures design, 102 participants were
tested with a short-form of the SCL-90-R (SA-45) 1
month before, at the beginning of the workshop, at
the end of the workshop, 1 month after the
workshop, and 6 months after the workshop. There
was a statistically significant decrease (p < .0005) in
all measures of psychological distress as measured by
the SA-45 from pre-workshop to post-workshop
which held up at the 6 month follow-up.

EFT Part 2
To practice EFT and become familiar with it, choose something that you would like to release. It may be best to choose something that is not too deep or difficult so that you can focus on learning the technique. A physical symptom or easily felt emotion is often easiest to begin with; belief work requires a bit more experience. Some people feel better working on complex or deep
issues with a coach or therapist so that they can
feel safe and are free to go with whatever comes up
as someone else is managing and guiding the
process.
Whether you work with a professional for deeper
change or not, this method is a wonderful and
efficient self-help tool. There is a tremendous sense
of personal power in knowing you have the means to
effect change in your feelings and energy field at the
touch of your fingertips!
I am including both a long and short form of EFT for
you to use. If the short form does not reduce your
symptoms, try the long form. If that does not work,
don't give up; there are other refinements that will
make the method successful.
I would be happy to help you, or you can research the EFT website for further information. The basic form of EFT is often all a person needs to
work through an issue. What generally will happen is
that as the original statement is used, modifications
can be made as new thoughts, feelings and
sensations emerge from the Ôuser' and provide new
information or a different aspect of the stated
problem that can be worked with on a next round of
tapping. Often as people tap, they receive
clarification regarding their issue, and this may
effectively change both perspective as well as the
problem statement.
The important thing to remember if you are tapping alone is to simply stay open to whatever emerges and just keep tapping on those things that feel problematic to you and you will know when you are done! When you feel indifferent or at peace when you think of the original problem that caused you angst, you are done! If there is more or another aspect to be cleared, your bodymind will alert you to this in due time and you can deal with it then. People are often amazed and disbelieve that they have actually released a stress or problem so easily and quickly. We have been conditioned to think that our healing must be long and arduous. Complex or chronic issues certainly can take repeated sessions. Also there are finer points with the technique that a professional may add and this may be preferable if a problem is a very serious or long standing one. However, I must say that I have seen significant
anxiety, pain and traumatic memories release in a
matter of minutes. Very often what comes next after
the release are other related thoughts, feelings and
beliefs to be worked. The original problem was so
much at the forefront that the person was never
able to get to the other material that is equally as
important as the symptom in terms of how it affected
their lives.
To acquaint yourself with EFT and become familiar
with the process, choose a minor annoyance--one
that produces a feeling in your body or mind that you
can identify and give a rating to. On a scale of 1-10
rate the discomfort (1 is almost no feeling and ten is
the worst it can get.
It is often best to begin with something small that
clearly gives you a symptom to focus on rather than
beginning with beliefs, because they are often
unconscious and may not give you a clear enough
goal to work with at the start. Belief work, as
mentioned before, is something that requires a
subtler awareness and is best left for a time when
you feel proficient with the technique.
Emotional Freedom Technique
Abbreviated Technique 1. Choose an issue to work with. The feelings associated with your issue need to be present for a correction to take place. The Set-up statement helps to bring the feelings to the forefront and also helps to remedy psychological reversals. Psychological reversals are things we may not be aware of that block the release of symptoms. The Òreminder phraseÓ, a shortened version of your set-up statement, helps keep the symptoms present so the correction can occur. Before you begin, evaluate your level of distress on a scale of 1-10. 2. Set-up statement Even though I________, I completely accept myself. Repeat this statement three times while rubbing the sore spot. 3. Tapping Sequence Tapping is done 7-9 times at each point. Points 1. Top of head 2. Brow, between the eyes 3. End of outer edge of eyebrow 4. Cheekbone, under eye 5. Under nose 6. Crease of chin 7. Hollow of collarbone 8. Breastbone 9. Underarm, four finger widths below armpit 10. Circle the eyes to the right 7. Hum a tone for 5 seconds 8. Count to 5 rapidly 9. Hum a tune for 5 seconds 5. Repeat tapping sequence 6. Reevaluate distress Repeat with remaining symptoms as needed. |

Prosperity, Peace and Power: A New
Perspective
On Oct. 24, 2006, we were fortunate to have Barbara Whittier at Ninth Wave to present her perspective on the current evolutionary issues facing humanity. Barbara beautifully blends her scientific knowledge of
astrology with the art of a powerful intuition. She
has an amazing ability to translate her knowledge
regarding universal patterns of consciousness
and energy into language that can be used on a
personal level in everyday life.
Barbara's presentation was not only fascinating, but
it also presented a viewpoint that is hopeful and
positive for humanity's future! It is easy in difficult
times to bemoan our fate and that of the world.
Like turning the lens on a kaleidoscope, Barbara
opened our eyes to a different view that offered the
potential of power and choice.
Her message about our current challenges spoke to
the necessity for each of us to face our deepest
fears in order to release that bound-up energy to
be channeled into greater levels of creativity,
prosperity and joy. It is through the process of
releasing our greatest fears that we have the ability
to create our greatest dreams!
Another related aspect of Barbara's message was that we are moving out of very old belief patterns around prosperity, values, and ideas about struggle and survival. The early stage of this process, the dissolution and breaking apart phase, brings up a lot of fear. If these fears can be collapsed, erased from our systems, then new energies become available that support newer forms of creativity, expanded consciousness and prosperity. We then have more capacity to bring innovative and original perspectives to our personal and global issues. Barbara also highlighted the differences in the
children who are growing today. They need a
different kind of parenting than the children of the
past. They have innate understanding, skills and
abilities that need to be nurtured and developed, as
they will be the ones to bring resolution to world
problems.
The key points that Barbara covered in her talk
were:
1. Dissolve your fear, and new energies are available to create your greatest dream. 2. Shifts in the Cosmos are providing powerful energy to help us evolve, not live in fear. 3. There is energy available now to let go of survival and struggle consciousness. 4. We must become aware and conscious to use this energy positively. 5.
